The First Material Lineages of Caeldon

The earliest lasting lines of life on Caeldon, between the shaping of its great regions and the rise of its first peoples.

Overview

The earliest lasting lines of life on Caeldon arise after its great regions take shape and before its first peoples take a form later ages would know.

Between The First Regional Differentiations of Caeldon and The First Stabilizations on Caeldon, the world begins to bear life that carries its fitness forward, generation after generation, across long ages.

Life That Holds Shape

Forest and mountain alone do not make a world with a history. It also needs life that keeps its shape through time.

As Caeldon's first great forests, mountains, basins, and deep thresholds settle into lasting contrast, some lines of life do more than survive in them. They hold a course. Growth, toughness, descent into the dark, and wandering all build up through inheritance, not only through the chance of each season. The planet begins to bear lineages that carry their homelands in their bones.

These are not yet the peoples of Caeldon. But they are the living stock from which lasting peoples will one day come.

Regions Become Ancestral Fields

The first lines of life on Caeldon are shaped by the same contrasts that already set its regions apart.

In the great canopy-and-root world, life grows towards rootedness, growth, and bonds to place, and in time this makes the rise of the Elves possible. In the mountain-and-depth world, life grows towards density, endurance, and a body built to bear weight, and in time this makes the rise of the Dwarves possible. In the lower basins and the uplands between, other mixed lines arise, whose long future will show itself only much later, when Humans emerge.

What counts here is not a finished kind, but a direction carried in the blood. The lands of Caeldon begin to become ancestral lands.

Before the Peoples Stabilize

These first lines of life come first because the later peoples do not rise straight from bare ground.

Before the oldest Elven and Dwarven lines harden into peoples, Caeldon has to sustain forerunners that carry fitness, affinity, and the stamp of their homelands through long ages without dissolving into the drift of weather and chance. Here the world's contrasts first breed inheritances sturdy enough to be shaped into peoples.

These lineages are the missing middle step between land and people. First Caeldon's regions endure, then they breed enduring lineages, and only after that do lasting peoples take form within them.

Historical Significance

The First Material Lineages of Caeldon close the gap between the land and its peoples.

Here the world stops keeping only the contrasts of its land and begins to keep living inheritances shaped by them. Without this step, the story would leap from the shaping of regions to finished peoples. With it, the order runs true: a world is made, its great lands grow apart, life begins to carry their stamp, and only then do the first lasting peoples arise.

Nothing of these forerunners is named in any song. They live on only in their heirs, in the Elf's bond to grove and root and the Dwarf's strength under stone.
