The Burdened Seal Histories
The spread of the Stonewake memory of necessary closure through the Dwarven holds, in the same span as the Bitter Root Histories. See The Threads of History.
Overview
As the Heartwell Struggles die down, Stonewake hold-memory spreads from the deep Ironspine into the wider Dwarven world.
The memory of closures that had to be made, of seals fought over, and of being judged by Elven grief does not stay with the Stonewake Compact. It enters the hold-songs of the Ironspine Holds and Dwarven history at large, and ages later a Headwater-facing telling carries the same story to outsiders.
The Stonewake Burden
It begins not only with the Heartwell fighting, but with the weight of being blamed for closing doors in a deep that might not have survived them open.
For Stonewake, The Rootstone Heartwell and the wider Roothollow aftermath do not prove that Dwarven keeping failed mercy. They prove that those who hold the deep can be forced into impossible choices, and then judged as if every death had been freely chosen. The wardens remember flood-water straining at the seals, the order to close with people still on the far side, and the knocking afterwards, which some of the oldest closures still give back: the Seal-Knockers. What Dark Elf memory tells as refuge withheld, Stonewake tells as a weight others demanded the Dwarves carry without sharing it.
- holy ground can become a claim that ignores what happens when the rock gives way,
- a cry for refuge can demand open doors that send the danger on to someone else,
- and later tellers can turn a hard, honest closure into plain cruelty while forgetting everyone else the flood would have taken.
Memory Beyond the Deep World
The burden does not stay in Stonewake.
Tallies of every closure, hold archives, wardens' accounts, quarrels over reopening, and the endless Elven accusation carry the Heartwell memory out into the wider Dwarven world. In the older Ironspine Holds it becomes part of what every hold teaches: keep the walls, bear the weight, and expect to be judged by those who never had to hold a roof up. Ages later, when Dwarven holds nearer the Headwater Marches meet Humans in The First Headwater-Ironspine Contacts, the same tales pass through another sieve: the need to explain Dwarven hardness to strangers, and the old anger that Elven holy claims are taken as proving themselves.
The Wider Dwarven Effect
Once the Burdened Seal Histories spread, the old enmity between Dwarves and Elves can no longer be told as a quarrel over slopes and seams.
The older Elderweald-Ironspine Frontier feuds give one reason for it. The Heartwell and the Roothollow flood add another, tying Elven branch-memory, holy remnants, and the cry for refuge to one of the deepest Dwarven arguments about who carries the load. Later Dwarven suspicion of Elven claims carries an old grievance of stone and seal as well as old border grudges.
The spread is lopsided. The wider Dwarven world takes up the Stonewake side more readily than the Gloamroot accusation, because hold-memory already asks who carried the load, who kept the way open, and who answered for the dead after everyone else had spoken. By the time the tales are told in every hold, few Dwarves still think of the Heartwell first as a lost refuge. They remember it as the clearest case of Elven holy claims and cries for shelter pressing on the holds without ever accepting the holds' terms.
Historical Significance
The Burdened Seal Histories turn one war in the deep into the inheritance of all Dwarves.
They are why later Dwarves carry an old memory of blame and burden even where their holds differ in depth, rule, and neighbours, and why fighting below can sour Dwarven-Elven dealings above. They reach the holds within this span and, ages later, the Headwater-facing ones, without anyone going near the Roothollows.
They are the Dwarven twin of The Bitter Root Histories. What they leave is a habit every hold keeps: the seal-tallies read aloud, every knock behind an old seal counted and seldom answered by opening it, and the warning taught to every young warden that one day the Elves will ask them to hold a door open and blame them for whatever comes through.
