Stairdeep
Hold at the foot of the Hauling Stair, the nearest thing to a centre in a Compact without a ruling hold.
The hold where the Hauling Stair's shafts reach the Deeps: lift-houses, storehouses counted as carefully as any reservoir, and the custodians' halls, whose doors carry more marks than any other in the region. Ten thousand or more Dwarves live there, many of them on deep postings from the mountain holds, with Kobold crews in its vent galleries. Every store that comes down is entered here before it goes on. Delvers bound for the lost works outfit here too, buying rope, finches, and lamp oil at hold prices, and the lowest taproom by the lift-houses keeps a wall of tally-sticks, one for each delver who went down and did not come up; a band about to descend touches the newest stick for luck.
