A small house near the end of the Known Ways, a few households whose chambers breathe only while the root above them lives. The root behind its working chambers has begun to die, and the house must choose between holding on while the wall greys and giving the chambers up with the fungus beds that count in them. Its threshold watch says it can hear the root-borers at night, a slow ticking in the wall, and that the black water behind the dying root has begun to rise.
