The Chromatic Chord

Fallowrise

Granary village on a rise above the flood line that keeps the Harvest-Mother's rest-year.

A village of some forty households on a rise above the flood line, its fields running down to the water and its wet meadows grazed in common. The granary stands in the middle and the threshing floor beside it, where the village's store and the lord's share are counted out. It keeps Anvelle's rest-year, which makes it exactly the kind of village where the second-harvest quarrel is fought, and its men remember the autumn the lord's riders came to take the seed-corn and three of them did not ride home.
