Dark Elves

The ancient underworld-margin Elven branch of the upper Roothollows, organized around guarded passage, chamber-right, and the duty of refuge, which the Roothollow Rupture drove deeper and hardened; their civilization is the Gloamroot Covenant. See The Elder Peoples.

Dark Elves , later associated with the Gloamroot Covenant, are an ancient underworld-margin branch whose identity is hardened, not created, by The Drowning Bloom and the later sequence in The Sealing of the Upper Roothollows, The Darkening of the Roothollows, The Founding of the Gloamroot Covenant, The Gloamroot Inheritance Ambiguity, and The Bitter Root Histories. Even before catastrophe, the old Roothollow world was the most threshold-conscious part of the wider Elven world, organized more strongly around guarded passage, chamber-right, admission chamber by chamber, and sworn refuge duty. Their later history is therefore not only catastrophe followed by a polity, but the forming of a darker branch and a long contest over whether its houses count as rightful Elves at all.
