The Mending Orders

The first Wrought civilization: sanctuary workshops that from c. 50 CR hid newly awakened Wrought in their walls and swore to who they were against the Unmakers, and by c. 200 CR had houses in most mixed towns of the Headwater, Ironspine, and Broken Marches worlds; they still swear that a Wrought stays the same person through damage and repair. See The Bridge Peoples.

Overview

The Mending Orders are the first major named Wrought civilization on Caeldon.

They hold no land and crown no king. They are a scattering of repair houses, sanctuary workshops, and sworn speakers who stand up for made persons before lords and elders, and who hide them, mend them, and sometimes fight for them where repair, ownership, memory, and bodily change are fought over.

Their strongest early presence lies near old Dwarven works, mixed repair towns, salvage settlements, frontier lords' halls, and contested workshop districts in regions such as The Ironspine, The Stonewake Deeps, The Headwater Marches, and The Broken Marches. They began around c. 50 CR as sanctuary workshops that hid newly awakened Wrought in their walls and swore to who they were, against the Unmakers during The Awakening of the Wrought, and by c. 200 CR had houses in most mixed towns of those regions.

Civilizational Nature

The Orders' core principle is that Wrought repair is bodily care, not equipment maintenance.

They do not stand over every repair, and they do not decide whether every Wrought is still a person after damage: a Wrought is presumed to be the same self unless there is real proof of death or unmaking. The Orders step in when a lord, craft-house, workshop, war-captain, or temple claims that damage, new parts, an old maker's claim, or a repair debt has turned a Wrought person into a thing.

Their houses do three things. They save damaged Wrought who need urgent care. They see that a major repair, refit, memory restoration, or chosen change is truly consented to. And they swear, before kin, neighbours, and gods, that a Wrought who has been mended, refitted, or remade is still the same person.

Historical Role

The Orders made a hiding place into a people.

Most Wrought quarrels are fought where care turns into control. A workshop claims the new parts it fitted. A craft-house refuses service without a binding bargain. A war-captain calls a warframe his property. A household calls the changing of a memory harmless upkeep. The Orders answer each claim as they would for a person of flesh: was it care, was it an emergency, was it chosen, or was it done to someone against their will?

Their strength is trusted word, skilled hands, sanctuary, sworn ledgers, and friends among the lords and towns who accept made persons, or who simply need repairers. In hostile places they work in secret, and a house may be burned when a lord wants its patients' parts. In friendly towns a repair house becomes as ordinary as a smithy, and Wrought and non-Wrought alike learn that being mended does not make a person a thing.
