The Grammar of War
A zone that wakes only around a battle fought with fierce conviction and fades when the fighting stops; those caught in it carry out the last order they received until they fall. See The Resonant Zones.
Overview
In the Grammar of War, the Binding Song speaks through the language of command: words become weapons and orders become physics. The Song itself gives all language weight; this zone gives overriding force to one kind of language only, that of warfare, tactics, and command, which here outranks the laws of nature.
In this zone, a general's shout does not merely inspire troops; it rewrites reality. The command "Hold the line" makes soldiers physically immovable. The order "Charge" grants supernatural speed. The cry "Fire" ignites the air itself. It is a place where the boundary between strategy and sorcery has dissolved, where the right words at the right moment can turn the tide of a battle or doom an army to annihilation.
Environment and Atmosphere
Visuals
- Colour Palette: Blood red, gunmetal grey, burnished gold, and the stark white of shouted commands that hang in the air like frozen lightning.
- Lighting: The light is harsh and strobing, punctuated by the flash of commands taking physical form.
- Terrain: A battlefield that shifts with the commands issued.
- Atmosphere: The air is thick with the smell of sweat, blood, and ozone. It vibrates with the tension of unspoken orders. Every syllable feels loaded with potential violence.
Sensory Experience
- Sound: A deafening cacophony of shouts, horns, and the crack of commands taking effect.
- Touch: The air feels dense and textured.
- Smell: Cordite, iron, and the acrid scent of spoken power.
- Thought: Thoughts feel urgent and combative. Ideas form as tactics. Every problem looks like a battle to be won. The mind is sharpened but narrowed; creativity is replaced by calculation.
The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)
The physics of the Grammar of War are governed by Command Reality:
- The Law of Obedience: A command issued with authority and conviction becomes physical law.
- The Law of Syntax: The structure of the command matters.
- The Law of Contradiction: Conflicting commands create chaos.
- The Law of Rank: The authority of the speaker matters.
Inhabitants and Visitors
In the Grammar of War, the spoken word is power and everyone has a place in the chain of command.
The Word-Generals
See Word-Generals.
- Description: Spectral commanders from past battles, their forms flickering with the echoes of their final orders.
- Physiology: They do not exist physically; they are the residual energy of past commands. They manifest when the zone activates, drawn by the resonance of battle.
- Culture: Echoes of Authority. They repeat their final orders endlessly, trapped in a loop of command. Some are coherent; others are fragmented, shouting contradictory orders that destabilize the zone.
- Behaviour: They are commanding and imperious. They cannot help but issue orders. They view outsiders as "soldiers" to be directed.
The Commanded
- Description: Living soldiers caught in the zone who have been "overwritten" by a command. Their eyes are glazed, their movements synchronized. They are puppets of the grammar.
- Decline Trigger: They will execute their last received order until they collapse or the zone fades. A soldier commanded to "Hold" will stand in place until he dies of thirst.
The Disobedient
- Description: Visitors who have resisted the commands and retained their free will. They are disoriented and paranoid, surrounded by allies who have become automatons.
- Decline Trigger: They must navigate the battlefield without issuing or obeying commands, which is nearly impossible in the Grammar of War.
Resources and Hazards
Resources
- Command Power: A skilled commander can achieve supernatural effects by issuing the right orders at the right time. A single word can turn the tide of a battle.
- Tactical Clarity: The zone sharpens the mind for strategy and tactics. Problems are solved with military precision.
- Historical Insight: The Word-Generals carry the knowledge of ancient battles and forgotten strategies.
Hazards
- The Overwrite: The primary danger. A strong command can overwrite a traveller's free will, turning them into a puppet. The more authoritative the speaker, the harder it is to resist.
- The Contradiction: Conflicting commands can cause reality to fracture. Soldiers may be torn in two by opposing orders. The ground may split. The air may ignite.
- The Echo: A command, once issued, echoes through the zone indefinitely. A traveller may be affected by an order given hours ago by a general who is no longer present.
- The Silence: In a zone defined by commands, silence is terrifying.
Veterans of a battle the Grammar woke in tell of the general whose one shout of "Hold!" froze both armies until the crows came, and of the herald who learned to speak there and was hired by every warlord who could pay.
Connection to the Veil and Other Planes
- The Veil: The Veil around the Grammar of War is a wall of shouted words.

Role in the Cosmology
The Grammar of War serves as the blade of the word.
- It represents the power of language to shape reality, for good or for ill. A command can save an army or condemn it.
- It is the reverse of The Silence (Meaninglessness): the Silence erases meaning, and the Grammar turns it into a weapon.
- Speakers aligned with Verba Prime call it a dangerous but necessary tool of that Prime's current: it gives language teeth, so that words are never empty, but it must be wielded with care.
