The Flux Maze
A zone of structure that will not hold still, whose Stone-Walkers move through the stone itself, guide and test in equal measure, and speak in riddles. See The Resonant Zones.
Overview
In the Flux Maze, the Iron Backbone's structure stops holding still and becomes dynamic and reactive. Where the Backbone proper is absolute, unchanging stability, the Flux Maze is a labyrinth where the very concept of "structure" is in a state of constant, intelligent flux.
In this zone, the walls, floors, and ceilings are not static stone; they are a living, breathing puzzle that rearranges itself in response to the traveller's presence, thoughts, or attempts to navigate. The Maze does not just confuse; it hunts. It learns from the traveller's movements, anticipating their path and blocking it before they can take it. Geometry here is subjective, and the only way out is to stop trying to "solve" the maze and instead learn to "dance" with it.
Environment and Atmosphere
Visuals
- Colour Palette: Deep greys, slate blues, rusted iron, and the warm, glowing orange of magma veins that pulse through the stone.
- Lighting: What little light there is comes from the cracks in the stone or from bioluminescent fungi that cling to the shifting walls.
- Terrain: A vast, multi-dimensional maze of corridors, chambers, and dead ends.
- Atmosphere: The air is thick with dust and the smell of wet stone and ozone.
Sensory Experience
- Sound: A constant, low groan of shifting rock.
- Touch: The walls feel warm and vibrating, as if they have a heartbeat.
- Smell: Damp earth, crushed rock, and the metallic tang of iron.
- Thought: Thoughts feel fragmented and disoriented. The mind struggles to form a mental map because the map is constantly being erased. Frustration is common; patience is rare.
The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)
The physics of the Flux Maze are governed by Reactive Geometry:
- The Law of Anticipation: The Maze anticipates the traveller's next move.
- The Law of Fluidity: Solid matter is not fixed. Walls can become floors; ceilings can become doors. The geometry of the space is fluid, changing in real-time.
- The Law of Resonance: The Maze responds to the traveller's emotional state.
- The Law of Memory: The Maze remembers every path the traveller has taken.
Inhabitants and Visitors
The Maze's residents spend their lives keeping their bearings and their sanity.
The Stone-Walkers
- Description: Humanoids with skin like polished granite and eyes that glow with the light of the magma veins.
- Physiology: They are part of the Maze itself, able to merge with the stone and move through walls. They draw sustenance from the kinetic energy of the shifting rock.
- Culture: Guides and Traps. They act as both helpers and obstacles, testing the traveller's worthiness to pass. They value adaptability and the ability to "listen" to the stone.
- Behaviour: They are silent and observant. When they speak, it is in riddles. They view outsiders as "rigid" and "clumsy."
Those Lost in the Maze
- Description: Visitors who have become so disoriented that they have forgotten their purpose. They wander the maze in circles, talking to the walls, convinced they are home.
- Decline Trigger: The Maze takes them in, their bodies merging with the stone, becoming new walls or corridors.
The Architects
- Description: Beings that have learned to control the Maze, bending its geometry to their will. They are rare and powerful (see Architects).
- Function: They act as masters of the maze, creating shortcuts or traps for others.

Resources and Hazards
Resources
- Hidden Knowledge: The Maze contains secrets and treasures hidden in its deepest, most unstable chambers.
- Adaptability Training: Navigating the Maze teaches the traveller to think flexibly and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Stone-Heart: A rare artefact found in the centre of the Maze that grants the wearer the ability to sense structural weaknesses or shifts in the environment.
Hazards
- The Shift: The primary danger. A traveller might be trapped in a collapsing corridor, crushed by a falling wall, or lost in a loop that never ends.
- The Anticipation: The Maze's ability to predict the traveller's moves can lead to frustration and despair.
- The Memory: The Maze's memory of the traveller's path can make it impossible to retrace steps, forcing the traveller deeper into the maze.
- The Madness: Stay too long and direction goes first, then identity, until the traveller is lost in the maze forever.
Treasure-seekers say the Maze keeps the hoards of everyone it has eaten, but most of them are kept out by one grave: the delver who mapped it for thirty years and was found dead clutching a map of a different maze.
Connection to the Veil and Other Planes
- The Veil: The Veil around the Flux Maze is a web of shifting corridors.

Role in the Cosmology
The Flux Maze serves as the test of the mind.
- It makes adaptability the price of survival. Without the ability to change, the traveller is crushed by the weight of the world.
- It opposes The Gilded Cage (Order), meeting the Cage's rigid structure with stone that will not stay put.
- Terra Prime's structure is present here but never settles, so the Prime of permanence works in the Maze as a crucible: it shows that the universe is not just a static structure, but a dynamic, evolving system.
