The Name Bound

The Binding Song narrowed to names, where a being's True Name floats above it and whoever holds a name can move its bearer like a puppet. See The Resonant Zones.

Overview

In the Name Bound, the Binding Song's power takes the form of the absolute authority of True Names. In this zone, language is not merely a tool for communication; it is the fundamental code of existence. To know a being's True Name is to hold the key to their essence, granting the knower dominion over their actions, thoughts, and very life.

Where the Song gives all language weight, the Name Bound makes one link unbreakable: the connection between Signifier (the word) and Signified (the object/being) is unbreakable. Here, a name is not a label; it is a leash. A contract written in ink is binding; a contract spoken in a True Name is absolute. It is a place of ultimate order and ultimate vulnerability, where identity is both armour and weapon.

Environment and Atmosphere

Visuals

  • Colour Palette: Deep ink-black, parchment-white, blood-red, and gold.
  • Lighting: The light is sharp and directional, casting long shadows that look like written text.
  • Terrain: A labyrinth of stone corridors lined with shelves of scrolls, tablets, and books.
  • Atmosphere: The air is dry and smells of old paper, iron gall ink, and sealing wax. It feels heavy with obligation. Every whisper sounds like a contract being signed.

Sensory Experience

  • Sound: A constant, low hum of chanting voices. The sound of quills scratching on parchment. The snap of a wax seal. A moment's silence feels like a breach of contract.
  • Touch: Surfaces feel like smooth vellum or cold stone. Touching a name written on a surface feels like touching the skin of the being it represents.
  • Smell: Ink, dust, and the metallic scent of blood used in ancient oaths.
  • Thought: Thoughts feel formal and structured. Casual thinking is difficult; the mind defaults to legalistic or declarative statements. To think is to declare.

The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)

The physics of the Name Bound are governed by Semantic Dominion:

  1. The Law of True Names: Most beings with a stable identity carry a True Name here: a name-anchored reference to who they are, not a hidden soul-object (see Resonant Continuity).
  2. The Law of Contracts: Any agreement made within the zone is magically binding.
  3. The Law of Identity: A being who has a True Name cannot hide it here.
  4. The Law of Silence: Speaking a name without permission is a crime. The zone itself punishes unauthorized speech with muteness or loss of memory.

Inhabitants and Visitors

In the Name Bound, people guard their own identity and hunt for power over others'.

The Scribes

  • Description: The Scribes of the Binding Song, drawn into the zone where the Song narrows to names.
  • Function: They keep the Ledger: every name spoken and every contract made in the zone, and they hold the zone's laws as neutral arbiters.
  • Behaviour: Here they speak only in declarations, and they view outsiders as "unregistered" or "unbound."

Those Bound by Name

  • Description: Visitors or beings who have had their True Names stolen or spoken by another. They move like puppets, their will overridden by the holder of their name.
  • Decline Trigger: They serve the holder of their name until the name is returned or the holder dies. Some become permanent servants of the zone.

The Nameless

  • Description: Beings who have successfully hidden their True Names. They are cloaked in shadows and silence, moving unseen (see The Nameless).
  • Function: They act as spies or thieves, stealing names from the Scribes or the Bound.

Resources and Hazards

Resources

  • Control: Knowing a True Name grants absolute control. This can be used to command servants, disable enemies, or secure alliances.
  • Contracts: Agreements made here are unbreakable. Useful for securing deals that cannot be reneged upon.
  • Identity Protection: The zone can teach travellers how to hide their True Name, granting immunity to name-based magic.

Hazards

  • The Theft: The primary danger. A traveller's True Name can be stolen by a Scribe or a Thief. Once stolen, the traveller loses autonomy.
  • The Backlash: Breaking a contract causes physical harm. A traveller who lies may find their tongue cut out or their bones shattered.
  • The Exposure: Identities are revealed here. Secrets are impossible. A traveller's darkest truths may be written on their skin.
  • The Erasure: If a name is erased from the ledger, the being ceases to exist. This is the ultimate punishment.

Name-thieves are the terror of the tales: the sorcerer who stole a warlord's True Name and rode his army home, and the village that hid its children's names with false ones for a generation after a Thief passed through.

Role in the Cosmology

The Name Bound serves as the ledger of existence.

  • It represents the necessity of identity for order. Without names, beings are indistinguishable and chaos reigns.
  • It checks The Shifting Path (Possibility), which lets a being become something else; and the Name Bound holds it to what it is called.
  • Verba Prime fixes every name here with full force, so the zone acts as a safeguard of that Prime's order: it gives every being a place in the universe, though Verba-aligned jurists warn that the same fixity, unchecked, becomes tyranny.
