Trace Possession
The occupation of a living mind by a foreign trace, an Echo of the dead or a pattern forced in by a working, so that the host speaks, moves, or remembers as someone else while still present beneath.
Overview
A child sits up in her bed and speaks with three dead voices. Trace possession is a living mind with someone else's pattern in it. What possesses is never a soul, for the world has none, but a trace: an Echo of the dead, a hardened remnant, a curse-thread, or a false identity worked in by magic. The host is still there underneath. That is the horror of it, and also the hope.
Cause
The dead leave Echoes, which usually soften and pass (see Resonant Continuity). Some cling to a living person instead. Travellers in the Ghost Step may bring a powerful Echo home with them, and in the Whispering Trace unresolved Echoes attach to travellers and drain their energy and sanity. A hostile remnant can do the same. Workings can force a pattern in: curse-threads, false identities, and hostile magical occupancy. The worst case is the possessing ancestor, an Echo and inherited Pattern bent by the Rotting Crown into a will that rules its heir.
Who It Strikes
Travellers who linger in the memory zones and planes; the grieving, who hold the door open; the exhausted and the very young, whose own pattern is weakest; and the heirs of lines the Rotting Crown has reached. Those with strong ties, a family that calls them by name, resist best.
Signs and Course
It begins with borrowed habits: a gesture the host never made, a turn of phrase from another generation, a memory of a place they never saw. The host loses short spans of time and is cold, tired, and short of breath, as a person drained.
Then the foreign trace speaks. The voice may be the host's own with another's accent, or several voices in turn. Those who knew the dead recognize them before anyone else does. The host knows things they should not and forgets things they should, sometimes including their own name.
The turning point is whether the host still surfaces. While the host still breaks through, confused and frightened, they can be brought back. A host who stops surfacing for days is being worn away, and a possessing ancestor ages its heir towards its own likeness.
Contagion
Possession does not pass from host to host. It is caught from places, zones, and workings, and a household with one case often has a cause in the house itself.
Treatment and Its Limits
Sanctified Exorcism drives out curse-threads, possessing traces, and false identities. It is exhausting, often traumatic for the host, and dangerous where the invading pattern is deeply woven in. A weak trace can be untied more gently with Trace Magic's Release Knot. Kin help by grounding the host, calling their name and speaking their memories, and testimony from those who knew the host before is how healers and priests tell the host from the occupant.
Afterwards the host needs rest, warmth, and food, as after any drain, and quiet company. Herbs for sleep help. Nothing makes the host forget what they lived through.
Mortality
Most hosts who are treated live. A long possession wears the body out, and a deep one can leave a host lost behind the occupant or dead under the exorcism. Survivors keep gaps in their memory, fragments of the other's habits, and often fear of being alone.
Lore and Belief
Most peoples say the dead have "come back in" or "ridden" the host, and many speak of a stolen soul; the schools hold that only a pattern is involved, not a soul. Families fear and honour the dead in equal measure, and some peoples welcome a dead elder's voice in an heir as counsel until it begins to rule. Mourners are told not to call the dead too long by name.
Hall-tales tell of the young lord ridden by a murdered ancestor who named his killer at the feast, and the hall that burned the same night.
In the Medieval Era
Trace possession is rare, and every case is talked of for a generation. The Halls of Consecration say who may exorcise in their temples, and temple exorcism is the usual answer; a village sends for a priest or a trace-reader and, failing that, keeps the host close and calls them by name. Possessions in a ruling house become matters of state.
