The Chromatic Chord

Silence-Bringers

Wind-Weavers of the Whispering Winds that can still the wind for a while, opening pockets of quiet in a valley where the voices never stop.

Overview

The Silence-Bringers are Wind-Weavers of the Whispering Winds that can silence the wind for a time. Where one settles, the endless chorus of voices stops, and a pocket of quiet opens in a place where quiet is otherwise impossible.

Appearance

A Silence-Bringer is a still place in the wind. It shows as a column of air that does not move, where the white dust falls straight down and settles, roughly the height of a person and twice as wide. Sometimes a shape can be made out at its centre, a slow grey figure sitting or kneeling. Entering its quiet is like stepping into a closed room: the voices cut off, the ears ring, and a visitor hears their own breathing for the first time since they came.

Habitat and Range

They drift slowly through the valley, settling for a while and moving on. They are rare.

Behaviour and Temperament

They seem gentle and slow, and drawn to those in distress: visitors overwhelmed by the voices, Wind-Listeners resting. Whether they choose this or are only drawn by something in a troubled mind is not known. They do not speak.

Abilities

They still the wind and its voices around them for a while. In their quiet, a voice that has taken hold of a listener loosens its grip.

Uses and Dangers

A visitor going mad from the noise, or possessed by a strong voice, may be saved by finding a Silence-Bringer's quiet. They are harmless, though a visitor who stays in the quiet too long may lose the voice they came for.

Lore and Belief

Pilgrims to the valleys say the Silence-Bringers are mercy given shape, and some sit for days in the hope of one. Some valley folk keep a moment of silence before speaking of the dead, in their honour.
